The firm was founded in November 1986 by Jon Mower and Keith Koeller. The new firm focused on the defense of residential developers, commercial general contractors, government entities, and medical professionals.
In 1988, Keith Koeller opened the San Diego office in response to the burgeoning construction defect litigation phenomena. As the firm grew, William Nebeker, an Arizona native, moved to manage the San Diego office. In 1987, Robert Carlson also joined the firm in the Orange County office. In response to its continued growth, Mr. Carlson moved to San Diego in 1990 to co-manage the office with Bill Nebeker. William Haluck joined the firm in 1990 as a partner in the Orange County office. The focal point of Mr. Haluck's practice was and remains governmental entity and general liability defense. The County of Orange remains a valued client both for Bill and the firm.
During the 90's, the firm's client list grew to include the direct representation of many of our nation's finest homebuilders. The explosion of construction in the neighboring western states of Arizona and Nevada led to the opening of the Phoenix, Arizona office in 1996 under the management of Mr. Nebeker, and the opening of the Las Vegas, Nevada office in 2000 under the management of Megan Dorsey. Mr. Nebeker and his team members in Phoenix have achieved trial success in the largest construction defect cases to proceed to verdict in Maricopa County. Mr. Carlson has teamed with Megan Dorsey on some of the most significant construction cases in Las Vegas, including the landmark Nevada Supreme Court Decision in Shuette v. Beazer Homes Holding Corporation, which dramatically reversed the trend of class action certification of construction defect litigation.
In February of 2005, the firm opened an office in Sacramento, California under the leadership of Jerry Satran. In the years following its opening, this office has seen steady growth and success.
KNCH opened its Orlando, Florida office in January 2013, with the relocation of partner, Ian Gillan, from our Las Vegas office. Mr. Gillan has been joined by partner, Valerie Edwards, who relocated from our Phoenix office; and partner, Chad Dunigan, who relocated from our Sacramento office. Our Orlando office continues the firm’s successful representation of builders, developers, general contractors and insurance companies involved in real estate development and construction defect-related litigation as well as its representation of business and individual clients in the areas of insurance bad faith defense, professional liability, construction claims and general liability.
Under the leadership of Partner John Donovan, formerly of our Orange County Office, 2015 has seen the opening of KNCH in the Austin, Texas area. The firm continues its focus on complex civil litigation, including the areas of construction and environmental litigation, insurance coverage law, business and employment law, and general insurance defense.
